One of the most essential parts of your support network is your friends. Jim Rohn once famously said that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. This based on the law of averages, which is a theory that states the result of any situation hinges on the average of all possible outcomes. If you think about it, this really makes sense. Who you surround yourself with creates your environment. If others around you believe something, you are much more likely to believe it. The truth is actions speak louder than words.

Even if a friend says he supports your recovery, if his actions are not in alignment with his words, it becomes a drain on your sobriety. You will only stress yourself by being around them. If you stay with friends who do drugs, even if they do not use right in front of you, at some time you will likely find the paraphernalia. You will see the symptoms of drug use, possibly even the challenges of withdrawal. In some ways this is like a constant reminder where you may find yourself reliving your days before treatment.

Some specific times of life and living arrangements present unique challenges to your sobriety. For example, if you are a college student, this is one of the most difficult times for an individual in recovery for substance abuse. For many, college is often considered to be a normal time time of partying and participating in behavior that is not normally considered acceptable. Because of this, for an individual in treatment, she may feel as if it is impossible to stay sober and away from drugs like Xanax. It is documented that willpower is just like any other muscle and it gets stressed. Tt weakens over time.

You must decide whether or not a relationship is worth your sobriety. The states that addiction is a form of chronic disease like heart disease. Your friends may or may not understand this. When you combine addiction with continuous temptation, this is often a bad combination. Relapse is quite common with the recovery process but even more so if you face continual triggers such as alcohol or drug usage in your presence. Smells, sights and sounds are different triggers that can cause cravings, which is the feeling or urge to use again. When these pile up over time, relapse becomes more likely. Admit You Are Having a Problem

When you do this, you show that you are self-aware, and this is very helpful in your recovery. In many ways this can protect your sobriety. Talk to your therapist about the situation, and decide what you are going to do about it. Do not overanalyze this situation. Move boldly, and make the right decisions, no matter how difficult they are to make.

Pursue Sober Friendships

When in recovery, you need to be around healthy relationships that encourage your sobriety. You can do healthy activities together and build each other up instead of tearing each other down with unsafe behavior.

Attend Support Group Meetings

You likely have some Alcoholics Anonymous meetings close by your home. When you go to a support group, where you can receive encouragement from others in your recovery who know how you feel. If you struggle with drug use, you can go to a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. As you continue you to go to meetings, you will be able to develop a sober peer community and possibly even find a sponsor.

Do Something You Love to Do

You may not feel like doing it at this time, but this small, intentional step can make a huge difference. This is one of the best ways in the world to reduce stress and to calm yourself down. The choices are endless. Maybe you would like to watch your favorite movie that makes you feel inspired, or maybe you would like to listen to some music. If you like to draw or paint, go by the craft store, and pick up a few supplies to use. Pursue whatever healthy activity you would like to do. When you do something you love to do, it is a great chance to connect with other friends or even make some new ones.
